Although I have been meaning to for a while, I have never before taken photos of the night sky. I think perhaps I know the light pollution near Ottawa will depress me, even though my parents have a farm 45 minutes out of the city. I can see the light pollution with my naked eyes, so I know photos would just be spoiled. However, when we went camping on a remote lake hours outside any city, I knew I had to give it a try. It took a while to get my settings just right, but I am so in love with the results.
For the sky shots, I was using my canon t3i with a 50mm f1.8 lens, with my settings at 12.3 sec shutter; f/1.8; ISO 800. I increased the exposure a tad in photoshop, and then sharpened using high pass filter, and that's it! No crazy editing. For the campfire shots I reduced my shutter a tad.
